CROCHETING INSTRUCTIONS
FOR TOTE BAGS MADE FROM PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS

Instructions for Making “Yarn”

Fold plastic bag lengthwise. Fold again, and again. Cut seam off bottom. Cut handles off top. Cut into 1-inch sections. Loop “circles” by slip knotting. Roll tightly into ball.

Instructions for Crocheting Bag with Plastic “Yarn”

Use “J” or “K” hook. Chain 30 stitches. Turn (chain one for turning). Single crochet for 12 or 14 rows, turning for each row. This makes the bottom of your tote. Mark the four corners of the bottom with “twisties” (bread-bag ties). Then start crocheting, using single crochet stitches, around and around this piece to form ends and sides. On the first two rows only, crochet two single stitches together at each of the four corners. This shapes the bag. Continue to crochet around and around until the bag is the size you desire (about 16 inches tall).

To make handles, mark the center of the bag and mark the sixth stitch from both sides of the center. Crochet to the sixth stitch. Chain 15. Attach to sixth stitch on the other side. Crochet around and do the same on the other side of the bag. Crochet six more rows around the bag.

These tote bags are currently being made by volunteers to give to the poorest of the poor mothers in the impoverished country of Haiti.
